The wedding officially starts with the baraat, or groom's procession. Guests dance around the arriving groom and his family. For the ceremony, the priest, groom, bride, and the parents sit at the mandap. Mantras are chanted by the priest for the welfare of the marriage and vows are taken in the presence of a sacred fire (the agni) as the witness. Finally, the groom applies sindoor (a red powder) to the bride's forehead and ties a black beaded necklace around her neck, symbolizing that they are married. And to answer the question in your head, of course, there will be food during and after the ceremony!

Sangeet a Sanskrit word literally meaning "sung together" is a time for celebrating, singing, dancing and making fun of the couple and their in-laws. In the olden days, it was reserved for women from the bride's family only. But why should girls have all the fun? ;)
We are opening this to all of our friends and family, but with one rider, thou must dance! And of course, though shall be fed well!

This is a party thrown by the groom's family to welcome the bride to their family and celebrate her arrival with their near and dear.

If you are unable to make it to the festivities in Puri, please come join us at the after-party in Chennai. In case you have missed the common element through all our festivities, food will be the highlight :) Local and vegetarian, of course!

A pre-wedding ritual, "Naandi" first involves tying a thread around the bride's and the groom's wrists to ensure their protection from all ill-wills. This ceremony is then followed by the groom making a mock-attempt to remain a bachelor and go on a piligrimage, called the "Kaashi Yaatre" because he is angry that no one is helping him find a bride. He stops only by the pursuasion of his maternal uncle who shows him the girl he has chosen for him to marry. A quick breakfast and chai will precede the Naandi ceremony.

Mehendi has long been an integral pre-wedding ritual for any South Asian bride, dating back to as early as the 15th century, when Mughal rulers first brought mehendi plants to the region. The mehendi ceremony used to serve the purpose of the bridal shower. Mehendi symbolizes the strength of the union between the soon-to-be-married couple, and it is believed that the deeper the color of a bride's mehendi, the happier and more prosperous her marriage will be. Mehendi will be preceded by a brunch by the beach.
